Carrying capacity of Boracay Island must be reviewed - Cimatu

Things are looking great for Boracay Island as just half a month in June, and already more than 2,400 foreign tourists visited. Moreover, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Sec. Roy Cimatu urged the government to review the carrying capacity of the Island to speed up its recovery.

According to the Malay Tourism Office data, from June 1 to 15, a total of 97,766 tourists visited the shores of Boracay, where 93,267 of the total arrivals were domestic travelers, 2,060 were Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW), and 2,439 were foreign tourists.

FOREIGN TOTAL: 2,439
DOMESTIC TOTAL: 93,267
OFW/OF's TOTAL: 2,060
Grand Total: 97,766

Last May 31, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) approved the removal of the pre-departure COVID-19 tests for fully-vaccinated and boosted foreigners to welcome more tourists into the country.

Meanwhile, Cimatu said at the Culminating Celebration held by the Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force Boracay in Balabag, Wetland Park (Wetland No.4), that reviewing the carrying capacity of Boracay would help the local government of Malay.

“Ang formula kasi na ginamit d’yan, it was the carrying capacity noon kasi, it was studied by the Research Bureau of DENR and also a team coming from the University of the Philippines. They revised the study into what we have now, the carrying capacity of 19, 200, something… now what if this will be exceeded later? When maraming pupunta dito, then ano ‘yong gagawin natin” Cimatu said.

“So I would like to advice… or sugget to make this study immediately. In fact, I heard from my fellow triumvirate, si Sec. Puyat that she will recommend for the study, for possible re-study of the carrying capacity so that, that will probably help the local government in anticipating a sudden increase of tourist for Boracay,” he added.

Through this, Cimatu said more tourists would be inclined to get to Boracay Island.
