BORACAY, Malay–The Malay Municipal Health Office is considering that a new Covid-19 variant is contributing to the recent spike of infections in Boracay Island.
According to Malay Municipal Health Officer Dr. Athena Magdamit, they performed two procedures yesterday in doing the swab test for the suspected cases.
Dr. Magdamit added that the specimens will be brought to the Department of Health (DOH) Western Visayas to be forwarded to the Genome Center in Manila to know if they are a new Covid-19 variant.
According to a recent study the new Covid-19 variant spreads faster and
to date, the Philippines has reported 3 "variants of concern" (VOCs) in its coronavirus-positive samples. These are the United Kingdom (B117), South African variants (B1351), and the Brazil variant (P1).
