In the country's vaccination program against the coronavirus, the next priority sectors should be the tourism workers and employees, Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat said.
Puyat added that she was given the "assurance" that the sector she leads would be next on the list for the vaccination drive after the health and other vulnerable groups. However, she did not put into detail the concerned parties were.
“We were already assured that after all of the priorities, it would be the tourism,” she said, citing the sector’s immense contributions to economy and employment. “So definitely tourism should be prioritized and we were assured that the tourism workers would be prioritized.”
Health workers and some government officials were the first to get shots of the long-awaited inoculation drive using China’s Sinovac vaccine as the Philippines launched its coronavirus vaccination program last week.
In the past few days, the country also received vaccines from British-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca, which were supplied by the COVAX facility.
COVAX is a global initiative that aims to ensure that low- and middle-income countries get equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
Meanwhile, government officials hope that the public may begin the inoculation drive as early as May. The government aims to vaccinate 50 to 70 million Filipinos by year-end.
