Starting in the first quarter of 2025, all new vehicles sold in the Philippines will be required to display fuel economy labels, similar to the energy efficiency tags found on appliances.
The Department of Energy (DOE) will implement the mandatory Vehicle Fuel Economy Labeling Program (VFELP), providing vehicle buyers with readily accessible, verified fuel economy ratings and emissions calculations at the point of sale.
The label will display the combined fuel economy performance rating as declared by the manufacturer, along with the CO2 emissions per kilometer. These ratings will be tested according to established international standards, with manufacturers likely adopting the WLTP cycle.
The fuel economy label will also include details like the vehicle classification, make and model, fuel type, and production year. All manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers, and rebuilders will need to register their vehicles under this mandate. The rating for each vehicle will be valid for six years.
This new requirement aims to promote transparency and empower consumers to make informed decisions about fuel-efficient vehicles. It is expected to contribute to the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
