Boracay Water Providers Face Residents’ Concerns Over Foul-Smelling Water and Rising Dengue Cases

Representatives from Boracay Island Water Company and Boracay Tubi, the island’s two water service providers, met with the Malay Sanitary Officer and residents of Barangay Manocmanoc to address concerns over foul-smelling water in the Angol area near Shell.

According to a Facebook post by Councilor Ernesto Bendiola Cruz, residents have linked the foul water to a rise in health cases and dengue in Zone 4. In response, the Committee on Environment Sanitation and Health requested the meeting to discuss possible solutions.

Cruz is hopeful that the concerns will be addressed promptly.

“Sana sa madaling panahon masolbar natin ang problimang ito. Atin itong tinutukan bilang tayo ang nasa Committee on Environment Sanitation at Committee on Health. Para sa ikakasaya ng taga Angol ng Zone 4 at Barangay Manocmanoc, ” he wrote.

The meeting comes amidst ongoing efforts to improve Boracay’s sanitation infrastructure and address environmental concerns.

In recent years, Boracay has faced criticism for its sewage issues, with reports of illegal wastewater discharge into the sea. The island underwent a six-month closure in 2018 to address these problems.

The meeting between water providers, the sanitary officer, and residents is a positive step towards addressing the ongoing sanitation challenges on Boracay. It remains to be seen what solutions will be proposed and implemented, but the involvement of all stakeholders is crucial to ensuring a healthy and sustainable future for the island.
