Philippines to Light Up Tourism with “Bonfire Diving”

Get ready to dive into a new nighttime adventure in the Philippines!

“Bonfire diving”, a unique concept created by Filipino diving photographer Ram Yoro, is set to become the country’s latest tourism offering.

This nighttime diving experience involves using lights to attract plankton and other marine creatures in shallow waters, creating stunning underwater photography opportunities.

“They are now looking for something new to try and blackwater and bonfire are perfect for that. Because you have the same skills set for macro shooting, so meron na sila nun, but yung plethora of subjects are different. Planktons usually look otherworldly,” Yoro explains.

While it sounds like fire is involved, Yoro clarifies that “bonfire diving” is actually similar to blackwater diving, just in shallower water. It’s easier to do and offers a unique perspective on the underwater world at night.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is enthusiastic about promoting this new experience, especially as the Philippines is already known for its world-class diving spots.

“They’ve been practicing this in Anilao and it’s becoming quite popular in the Philippines. Yung pinakamaganda dito talagang Pilipino ang nag develop,” says May Unchuan, Regional Director of the Department of Tourism Region 10.

Bonfire diving will be officially unveiled at the Camiguin Diving Festival this month, showcasing the Philippines’ innovative approach to tourism.

The DOT is also focusing on “experiential tourism”, aiming to attract tourists seeking deeper cultural immersion.

“They are really looking to see more experiential travel into the Philippines… Experiences into our indigenous communities, our culture, experiences into learning a skill, maybe learning how to cook, the English language, they love that- learning the English language in the Philippines,” says Tourism Promotions Board Chief Operating Officer Maria Margarita Nograles.

With this focus on unique experiences, the Philippines hopes to surpass last year’s successful Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX), which generated PnP 250 million in sales.
