The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines has set a target to increase the country’s forest cover by an additional three million hectares by the year 2028. This initiative is part of the agency’s comprehensive efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and promote sustainable environmental practices. DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga recently disclosed this goal during a session with the House committee on appropriations, where the agency’s proposed budget for 2025 was under deliberation.
Loyzaga highlighted that the DENR has identified four key areas for reforestation, totaling 1.2 million hectares that can be utilized for projects aimed at restoring and expanding forested areas across the country. The ultimate objective, as outlined by Loyzaga, is to augment the existing 50 million hectares of classified forest lands with an additional three million hectares of forest cover. Currently, only seven million hectares of the classified forest lands are actually covered with forests, underscoring the urgent need for reforestation efforts to bolster the country’s natural green spaces.
This initiative will greatly benefit Boracay as Proclamation No. 1064 signed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2006 that classifies the island into 377.68 hectares of reserved forest land and 628.96 hectares of agricultural land.
In line with its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability, the DENR has introduced a geospatial database system to effectively map and monitor the country’s natural resources. Loyzaga emphasized the importance of assessing the quality of forests, including factors such as fragmentation, proximity, and overall health, as these aspects play a crucial role in understanding the impact of climate change on forest ecosystems. By leveraging advanced technology and data-driven approaches, the DENR aims to make informed decisions and implement targeted interventions to safeguard the environment.
To incentivize and encourage participation in reforestation initiatives, Loyzaga stated that the DENR is planning to offer incentives to interested parties and stakeholders willing to invest in forestry projects. The agency is poised to present its comprehensive plan for the first 1.2 million hectares earmarked for reforestation to President Marcos for approval and support. By fostering collaboration and partnership with the private sector and other relevant entities, the DENR seeks to mobilize resources and expertise towards achieving its ambitious reforestation goals.
The DENR’s proactive initiatives and strategic interventions underscore its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. By setting these targets for forest cover expansion, promoting reforestation efforts, and conducting thorough studies on environmental impacts, the agency is paving the way for a greener and more resilient future for the Philippines.
