First Gen, a leading clean energy provider in the Philippines, has issued a call to action to the country’s hotel industry, urging them to embrace renewable energy (RE) sources to reduce costs and environmental impact.
During the recent Hospitality Philippines Conference, First Gen Vice President Carlo Vega emphasized the significant financial and ecological benefits of transitioning to cleaner energy. He highlighted the fact that hotels, major consumers of electricity, can significantly reduce their power bills while minimizing their carbon footprint by tapping into RE sources.
“Hotels are massive consumers of electricity, especially for air conditioning, cooling, and water-heating systems,” explained Vega. “These amenities account for over half of their utility expenses. By tapping into RE sources, hotels can significantly reduce their power costs and, at the same time, shrink their carbon footprint.”
Vega emphasized that the Department of Energy (DOE) is actively promoting RE development and energy efficiency, making it easier for hotels to make the shift. He cited programs like the Green Energy Option Program and Retail Competition and Open Access, as well as the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, as valuable tools for collaboration between companies and clean energy providers.
First Gen, with its vast experience in clean energy solutions, is well-positioned to assist hotels in this transition. The company, with 3,668 megawatts of combined capacity, boasts the largest RE capacity in the country (1,651 MW) from its solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power plants.
This shift to cleaner energy sources holds particular significance for iconic tourist destinations like Boracay, where hotels often rely heavily on electricity for their amenities. By embracing RE, Boracay hotels can not only reduce their environmental impact but also enhance their sustainability credentials, attracting environmentally conscious travelers.
