President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with a delegation of the Pacific Century Fellows (PCF) from Hawaii on Wednesday, aiming to further strengthen relations between the Philippines and the American state, particularly in the tourism sector.
“It is always a pleasure for me to welcome our friends from Hawaii, especially when the purpose of your visit is to continue finding ways to interact even more closely with the Philippines, considering, of course, that the Filipino population in Hawaii is a significant one,” President Marcos said during the meeting at Malacañan Palace.
The PCF, a group of established and emerging leaders in Hawaii, was founded by former Honolulu mayor and current President and CEO of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association Mufi Hannemann. Hannemann expressed interest in exploring ways to boost tourism between the Philippines and Hawaii, highlighting the potential for increased air services and collaboration in tourism development.
“There are many opportunities for us to work together,” Hannemann stated. “I would like to see how we can work with Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco to increase tourism both from the Philippines to Hawaii and Hawaii to the Philippines.”
Hannemann, a vocal supporter of the Filipino community in Hawaii, has championed their advancement and promotion within the tourism workforce. His appointment of Filipinos to various positions within his administration and boards highlights his commitment to inclusivity and representation.
The meeting reflects the strong and enduring relationship between the Philippines and Hawaii, with both sides seeking to strengthen partnerships in areas of mutual interest, particularly in the tourism sector.
