Beware of Love Scams This Valentine’s Day, Warns Bureau of Immigration

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is urging Filipinos to be extra cautious this Valentine’s Day, warning against online love scams that target unsuspecting victims, especially during this romantic season.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado revealed that the agency has received numerous reports of Filipinos falling prey to these scams, where individuals posing as foreign nationals claim to be detained by immigration authorities upon arrival in the Philippines.

“These scammers weave elaborate stories to make their victims believe they are in trouble and need urgent financial help,” Viado explained. “But remember, the BI never demands payments over the phone and is not responsible for handling incoming currency or personal belongings like luggage or jewelry.”

In a common tactic, a scammer develops an online romance with a victim and promises to visit the Philippines. They then claim to be stopped at the airport for carrying a large sum of money or expensive gifts, like an engagement ring. A fake immigration officer contacts the victim, demanding money to secure the foreigner’s release.

One victim in August reported being tricked into paying P70,000 after being told her foreign fiancé was being held for money laundering violations. Other victims have lost money believing they were helping their partners, only to realize later they were scammed.

Commissioner Viado stressed the importance of vigilance and verification. “These scammers manipulate people’s emotions to steal from them. Never send money to anyone without verifying their claims through official channels,” he cautioned.

The BI has vowed to protect Filipinos from such fraudulent schemes, aligning with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen border security and prevent criminal activities that target innocent individuals.
