ILOILO City — MORE Power, the sole electricity distribution utility in Iloilo City, has launched Western Visayas’ first fully unmanned 30MVA substation, marking a major step in modernizing the region’s power infrastructure and strengthening energy reliability for consumers.
The new facility is remotely operated through an advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, allowing engineers at MORE Power’s Control Center to monitor and manage operations in real time without the need for on-site personnel.
The automated substation can monitor load flow, voltage levels, and equipment conditions through Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), forming part of MORE Power’s five-year modernization and grid development program.
According to Engr. Wilmar Gonzaludo, PSPD Manager, the project was the result of “long and meticulous planning, plus a deep understanding of the system that Iloilo consumers need.”
The company said the initiative reflects its commitment to delivering more efficient, reliable, and innovative services to Ilonggo consumers amid the city’s growing energy demand.
MORE Power noted that when it began operations in 2020, several substations in Iloilo City were already nearing overload, with some facilities reportedly not upgraded for nearly three decades. Since then, the utility firm has undertaken massive rehabilitation works, including repairs and upgrades of substations, distribution lines, aging poles, and systems affected by high losses and illegal connections.
“In other places, SCADA and automation are already in use. Advanced technology exists, so why not leverage it, especially with MORE Power here to deliver the same high-quality services to consumers?” said Engr. Mark Anthony Molano, Substation Projects Manager.
Molano added that strengthening the distribution system remains essential in ensuring stable electricity service, especially during periods of peak demand.
Industry observers noted that fully automated substations remain relatively uncommon outside major metropolitan and industrial centers in the Philippines, making Iloilo City’s latest development a significant milestone for regional power modernization.
The company also assured the public that despite the unmanned operations, security measures remain in place, with personnel continuing to guard substations and other critical facilities.
The development comes as Iloilo City and neighboring areas continue to experience rapid economic growth, increasing the demand for stable and dependable electricity supply.
