The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary, Amenah “Mina” F. Pangandaman, has approved the release of P579.312 million for projects under the People’s Survival Fund (PSF) to enhance community resilience and sustainability.
The PSF, established through Republic Act No. 10174, provides long-term financing for local government units (LGUs) and accredited organizations to address climate change adaptation programs. The fund plays a vital role in building adaptive capacities, promoting sustainable development, and safeguarding vulnerable communities from climate change impacts.
The allocated funds will support six development grants, five full-scale projects, and additional assistance for two ongoing projects in various regions, including Northern and Eastern Samar, Mountain Province, Bukidnon, Isabela, Quezon, Sarangani Province, and Agusan del Norte.
Projects focus on flood control measures like levees, floodgates, and drainage systems to prevent flooding, safeguarding lives and properties. Coastal regions will benefit from investments in seawalls and coastal defense structures to protect communities from storm surges and erosion.
The agricultural sector will receive support for developing climate-resilient crop varieties and sustainable farming practices to ensure food security amidst changing climate conditions. Additionally, early warning systems will be enhanced to enable swift responses to natural disasters and minimize damage.
Environmental restoration projects such as reforestation and mangrove restoration are also prioritized to promote carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and coastal protection against storm surges and erosion.
The release of funds underscores the government’s commitment to mitigating climate change and empowering local communities in the fight against the climate crisis.
