A landmark initiative aimed at ensuring women’s voices are heard and integrated into the critical discourse on climate change and a just energy transition (JET) took place last week.
The “Ensuring Feminist Agenda, Voices and Response to Climate Change towards Community-Based Just Energy Transition (FAVOR – JET)” project, led by the Women’s Legal and Human Rights Bureau (WLB) in partnership with PhilinCon and funded by Oxfam Philippines, brought together women leaders from the Nabaoy community for a series of orientation and community dialogues.
Held at Rekwood Hotel in Malay, Aklan on November 4th and 5th, the event focused on bringing the experiences and perspectives of marginalized communities, particularly women, to the forefront of the JET discourse.
“Often, the feminist lens is missing in the entire JET discourse,” said WLB in a statement. This project seeks to fill that gap, ensuring that the voices and lived experiences of ‘marginalized communities that are more susceptible to climate crisis’ are heard and considered, ” WLB added.
The project builds on extensive groundwork conducted by WLB between August 2023 and February 2024, which included community discussions, civil society organization consultations, learning sessions, and policy influencing/advocacy activities with the national government, including the Philippine Commission on Women.
This engagement aimed to surface common issues concerning the JET discourse from a community-based perspective and leverage the Philippines’ strategic role as Chair of the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The dialogues held in Boracay represent a critical step in ensuring that the transition to a just and sustainable energy future is informed by the lived experiences of women and their communities.
