Gokongwei’s JG Summit Olefins Corporation (JGSOC) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have renewed their partnership to continue the preservation and rehabilitation of Boracay Island’s wetlands. The agreement, signed on November 16, 2023, extends JGSOC’s stewardship of Boracay Wetland No. 8, a 1.8-hectare area in Barangay Manoc-Manoc, Aklan, for another three years.
Under the agreement, JGSOC will maintain the tree nursery, organize tree-planting activities, repair perimeter fences, and install informative signage about the importance of wetlands. The DENR, on the other hand, will develop a wetland management plan, monitor the rehabilitation progress, and improve water quality in the area.
The partnership began in 2019 in response to a presidential proclamation and executive order aimed at reversing the degradation of Boracay Island. The renewed partnership will continue these efforts.
Through their joint efforts, JGSOC and the DENR aim to ensure the protection and vitality of Boracay Island’s wetlands for future generations.
